Sky-High Opportunities: $427 Million in Grants Set to Transform U.S. Airports and Boost DBE Businesses

The Biden-Harris Administration is making significant strides in modernizing America's airports. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced a substantial $427 million in funding for 245 airport-related infrastructure projects across 39 states. This initiative is part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Infrastructure Grants (AIG) program, which allocates a total of $25 billion for airport improvements, including terminal expansions, runway safety enhancements, and air traffic infrastructure upgrades.

A Historic Investment in Infrastructure

"Americans are flying in record numbers this summer, and the Biden-Harris Administration is continuing to invest in our nation’s airports to make travel more convenient for passengers,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. The announcement underscores the administration's commitment to ensuring safety and efficiency in air travel.

This round of funding represents the second-largest investment in AIG history, according to FAA Associate Administrator for Airports, Shannetta R. Griffin, P.E. The funds will support crucial projects such as lighting and runway signage upgrades, new terminal constructions, and expansions to accommodate increased passenger traffic.

Key Airport Projects Funded

Some of the notable grants include:

  • $29.4 million to John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Ohio, for a new terminal tarmac and taxiway.

  • $10.6 million to El Paso International Airport, Texas, for a new general aviation apron and rehabilitation of existing pavement.

  • $18.1 million to Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, California, for new taxiway and terminal construction.

  • $24.9 million to Southwest Florida International Airport, Florida, for new taxiway construction and terminal access road expansion.

  • $13.6 million to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, Kentucky, for replacement of passenger boarding bridges.

Opportunities for DBE Businesses

The influx of funding for these projects creates significant opportunities for DBE (Disadvantaged Business Enterprise) certified businesses. Federal and state-funded projects often include requirements to hire DBE-certified firms, opening doors for small, minority, and women-owned businesses to participate in these transformative infrastructure developments.

If you’re looking to get your DBE/ACDBE Certification, now is a perfect time to act. This certification can position your business to compete for these upcoming contracts and take advantage of the opportunities created by these grants.
